The First Spark

Nielsen Woodwinds has been a trusted name among oboists and bassoonists worldwide since its founding in 1949 by Edmund and Dorothy Nielsen. The business began on East Jackson near Wabash in Chicago, where Edmund managed woodwind sales and service, while Dorothy handled secretarial, accounting, and customs work. Dorothy soon expanded their offerings, specializing in bassoon bocals, instrument care, and reed-making supplies.

Turning Point

After Edmund Nielsen’s passing in 1981, their daughter Barbara joined the team, assisting with secretarial duties and order fulfillment. In 2011, Dorothy moved Edmund Nielsen Woodwinds to Villa Park, continuing to operate the business with Barbara until her retirement in 2011 at the age of 87.

Momentum in Motion

In September 2015, Theresa Delaplain and Robert Mueller purchased the business from Barbara, relocating operations to Fayetteville, Arkansas. They diligently upheld the Nielsen tradition, committed to providing top-quality products and exceptional service.
